Lake Michigan - Mason, MI

Current Season: Winter / Mid-January 2026Primary Targets: Steelhead, Brown Trout, and Yellow PerchWhile the open waters of Lake Michigan are currently in their deep winter transition, the action is far from frozen for Rod Hawgz Fishing Charters. As of mid-January, we are shifting our focus to the productive nearshore areas and tributaries where the winter bite remains steady.Current Fishing ConditionsThe "big lake" is experiencing typical January volatility. While ice is forming in the bays and harbors, many of the southern and central river mouths remain accessible for those hardy enough to brave the cold. Water temperatures are hovering in the high 30s ($35 \text{ to } 39^\circ\text{F}$), which has concentrated fish in specific thermal pockets.Top Species & TacticsSteelhead: The winter run is in full swing. We are finding active fish in the lower reaches of the tributaries and near harbor pier heads. High-visibility jigs tipped with waxworms or spawn sacks have been the most consistent producers during mid-day "warmth."Brown Trout: The shallow nearshore shelf is currently home to some hungry Browns. Trolling small stickbaits or casting spoons near warm water outflows has yielded several trophy-sized fish this week.Yellow Perch: For those looking for a "eater" trip, the perch are schooling in the $10 \text{ to } 20\text{ foot}$ depths in protected harbors. Light jigs and minnows are the ticket here.Captain’s Tip for Winter Anglers"In these temperatures, the bite is often subtle. Slow down your presentation and watch your electronics closely. The fish are there, but they won't chase a fast-moving bait like they do in July. Precision is key!" — Captain David EdgertonBoat Status: Ready for ActionOur 2024 Hewescraft 270 Alaskan is uniquely equipped for this time of year. With a fully heated cabin and state-of-the-art Lowrance electronics, we can keep you comfortable and on the fish even when the air temperature drops below freezing.
